Footballers nowadays have become obsessed with their image and are such celebrities that wherever they are, they always have to be looking good.

However a select few can produce some shocking haircuts and we take a look at some of the worst from the past few years.

GK - David James

He had them all: Afro, cornrows, skinhead. You never knew what he was going to be sporting the next match. While it was good in patches, for sheer number of horrific hair days, he's definitely this teams goalie.

RB - Bacary Sagna

We've seen a number of black players over the years go for the dyed blond hair and a lot have struggled to pull it off, Sagna included. The blond cornrows tied into a little ponytail at the back really don't do it for me.

CB - Rio Ferdinand

Not many would argue about his quality as a defender but he's certainly had some different haircuts in his time. He's given long cornrows and an afro a go among others.

CB - Abel Xavier

Another black player who just couldn't stick to a haircut. He was always peroxide blond and ranged form afros to mohawks and not one was even nearly acceptable.

LB - Taribo West

Possibly the worst of all time. A shaved head with only two bits of hair sticking up towards the back. It's hard to put into words it's such a shocker. Must have made heading very hard for the Nigerian.

RM - David Beckham

While he has now become one of the most marketed, celebrity footballers of all time, in his formative years his hair left much to be desired. Cornrows, long hair, short were all tried and definitely failed.

CM - Tom Huddlestone

Now admittedly this one was because of a bet that he'd cut his hair when he scored, it was just unlucky that he did it before a very long barren run. It keeps growing and growing and with the Spurs midfielder not on top form, looks set to grow even more.

CM - Marouane Fellaini

The Belgian midfielder is completely dominant in the air and many put it down to his afro but that just doesn't seem plausible. It looks completely out of place on the big man and surely just becomes a nuisance to deal with.

LM - El Hadj Diouf

Most of the time he is bald but occasionally he has allowed a little blond thin mohican to grow down the middle and there's no other way to put it than it just looks horrendous.

ST - Djibril Cisse

No doubt about him being included. Like David James he can't settle on a look; he's moved between bald, dyed blond, mohican and also some strange shaving patterns on his head. He just can't choose on which looks least ridiculous.

ST - Jason Lee

His sticking up dread-lock ponytail was an absolute travesty. Nicknames 'The Pineapple', it amazed opposition defenders and fans but was all part of why he became a legend at Nottingham Forest.
