Will David Moyes win trophies at Manchester United?
Manchester United opinion: David Moyes will need to get used the pressure of managing one of the biggest clubs in Europe
It seems Manchester United have gone for long-term stability rather than short-term success with the appointment of David Moyes.
Moyes, who has made Everton one of the best teams in the Premier League on a shoestring budget, now faces the task of competing for the title every season with Manchester United.
With Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton both putting their faith in the services of the Scot, it seems the perfect fit. Without a shadow of a doubt, Moyes will keep United in a stable position in the league and Europe - but can he win as many trophies as Sir Alex did during his tenure?
There are some shortcomings in the appointment of Moyes. The obvious being that he hasn't won a major trophy in 11 years at Everton. He has made the club successful its in own right but they don't have anything to show for it.
But with a better squad and more transfer money, Moyes can surely deliver silverware at Old Trafford. Well that isn't always the case as many managers who made the jump from above average Premier League sides to 'bigger' teams haven't fared too well.
Roy Hodgson led Fulham to the Europa League final and also made them challenge for a European spot with limited resources. His sensational move to Liverpool, though, ended in dismay. With a strong squad at his disposal, it was expected that Hodgson could bring back the glory days at Anfield, but it proved to be just the opposite as he made Liverpool worse and was immediately sacked within half a year.
Moyes also hasn't performed well against the big guns away from home. He has never beaten the "big four" away from home and that record will be etched forever if he doesn't beat Chelsea on the final day this season.
Goodison Park was always a formidable place to go to for any club. The two Manchester clubs haven't scored at Everton this season. Moyes is the type of manager who could provide United with a top three finish every season, but at United the expectations are much higher. They will want to win the league every season and that hunger to win was instilled in them by Ferguson.
Moyes also hasn't ever managed in a Champions League game, except the two-legged play-off against Villarreal in 2005. Moyes has never had the opportunity to participate in the group stages and this could be considered a flaw. But, again, he has never managed in Europe so you never know how he'd turn out to be.
This could be a slight advantage for him, but that's if he takes advice from Sir Alex on how to prepare for European encounters. Moyes has all the tools to keep Manchester United near the top, but he will have to work very hard in order to keep United at the top as Ferguson did.
Sir Matt Busby famously said: "At Manchester United we aim for perfection, if we fail we might as well settle for excellence".
This tells us how high the standards are at United and what Moyes is expected to do when he joins United come July. Moyes has passion and determination for the game, making him a shrewd manager.
He has qualities similar to Sir Alex but what makes them different is that Ferguson has that winning mentality. Currently Moyes may not have it, but it may develop as time progresses at United. Time will tell if the Scot can win silverware as frequently as the previous Scot at the helm, but one thing's for sure: silverware or not, Moyes will be consistently good at United or any other club for that matter.
