After the FA Cup final I think we can all agree that the competition certainly hasn’t lost its magic. It was a true fairy-tale. David took on Goliath and not only beat him, he outplayed him.
This was a special day for Dave Whelan, who broke his leg in the FA Cup final in 1960. This was an injury that would ruin his career so it was fitting that Wigan would win this competition when he led them out at Wembley.
Then there is the fact that Wigan were in the old third division in 1997, who would have thought that in 2013 they would be in the Premier League and be deserved winners of the FA Cup.
It was pure drama as Ben Watson scored his injury time winner but Wigan kept calm right until the final whistle to win the competition. I don’t think that anybody could argue with the result, Roberto Martinez’s men fully deserved it.
One of the huge success stories of this year’s competition was Callum Mcmannaman, who has only just started plying his trade at the highest level, came up against Gael Clichy, who probably earns up to ten times more than the young Englishman. Long story short, Mcmannaman gave Clichy a torrid time and won the corner which led to the Wigan goal as he was voted manof the match.
Since their cup heroics Wigan have been relegated from the Premier League, yet despite that sour taste, would they really swap that special day at Wembley for anything?
I think that if Wigan could have chosen between FA Cup winners or Premier League survival, they would chosen the cup. What do you think? What was more important?
