Arsenal have been given encouragement in their chase for a new goalkeeper as Barcelona number one Victor Valdes has indicated a desire to leave Camp Nou this summer.
According to Radio Barcelona, the 31-year-old has told the Catalan club’s hierarchy he does not want to see out his contract, which ends in 2014.
The report claims Valdes has informed Barcelona he wants a transfer this summer, with Arsenal being tipped as his possible destination.
The Gunners are reportedly looking for a new, experienced goalkeeper as part of a summer spending spree.
Manager Arsene Wenger is said to be keen to inject greater competition for the number one spot at Emirates Stadium.
Wojciech Szczesny was the undisputed first choice for some time but a period of poor form saw him replaced by compatriot Lukasz Fabianski.
Despite improving since coming back in following Fabianski’s injury, Szczesny is still expected to be challenged by a more experienced campaigner next season.
Arsenal may have to work hard to land Valdes, however, as big spending AS Monaco are also credited with an interest in the report.
