Comedy misses galore on Eredivise final weekend

Published 2 Comments

Despite Ajax streaking to the Eredivisie title, there was still plenty to play for on the final weekend of action in the Dutch top-flight, as sides battled to avoid relegation or secure a shot at European action.

One of the teams aiming for the latter was Utrecht who, although having a Europa League playoff guaranteed, were battling with Twente to decide which of the two would earn a more favourable semi-final tie.

Utrecht did what they needed to do, comfortably dispatching of Heracles 3-0, but it could have been even simpler for the former were they able to finish their chances more adeptly.

Dave Bulthuis was guilty of one of the misses of the season as he contrived to fire over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy, with the ball having been presented at his feet courtesy of a clumsy save from Remko Pasveer.

Bulthuis effort was close, however, when compared to a fail by Youness Mokhtar on the same afternoon during PEC Zwolle's defeat of ADO Den Haag.

The 21-year-old Dutch striker, who signed for a minimal fee from PSV last summer, somehow ballooned a strike over the crossbar when it looked easier for him to add his sixth goal of the season.

Mokhtar was involved again as PEC Zwolle missed three clear cut chances in the same move - with two shots hitting the woodwork - but the forward did eventually get on the scoresheet as he added the final goal of a 4-2 win.
