Aston Villa's out-of-favour striker Darren Bent has revealed his frustration at his lack of first-team football under current manager Paul Lambert.

Lambert, who joined Aston Villa in June 2012, has preferred to bring youth through the ranks at Villa Park, resulting in Bent playing less of a role in first-team affairs. Christian Benteke, Andreas Weimann and Jordan Bowery have all been preferred ahead of the England international this season.

Benteke has been the club's standout striker this season, scoring 19 goals in his debut season, making him an instant fan favourite and leaving £24m Bent on the bench most weeks.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Bent spoke openly about his experiences of being used sparingly in Lambert's first eleven this season.

"It is about playing, and, at my age, I cannot have another season like this one," Bent said. "Time is running out. I'm not one of these guys who wants to sit there, not doing anything and get paid."

Bent also spoke of his confusion as to why he has not been paired with the prolific Benteke, who he thought may be the perfect striking partner to suit his "fox-in-the-box style".

Bent continued: "He was a big guy and it looked as if the partnership would form. But it's not meant to be. I don't quite know why."

Should Bent leave in the summer, Aston Villa will probably look to coup as much as they can for the England international, but his lack of first-team action is likely to have reduced his market value.
