Joey Barton has been the talk of Twitter (again) by revealing that he has taken the decision to retire from the England international team.

Unfortunately for Barton, on loan at Marseille from QPR, his England career was not as illustrious as the likes of Rio Ferdinand, who also retired from the England set-up this week. The former Newcastle midfielder's international career was about as poultry as they come, with Barton making only one substitute appearance for the national side.

That sole international cap came in a friendly against Spain in February 2007. England stuttered to a 1-0 defeat in Steve McClaren's first home defeat in charge of the national team, Andres Iniesta grabbing the only goal.

In those 18 minutes, Barton had very little effect on the flow of the game, but managed to stay out of trouble. But his uninspiring form led to Steve McClaran never calling on the controversial midfielder again during his time at the England helm.

Barton has been known for his Twitter rants, and this one was no different. Barton tweeted: "Decided to announce my international retirement as well. I was honoured to represent my country for such a long illustrious time. #sadtimes."

"Decided to focus on being fit at club level. Hope everyone understands. In my defence, those 18 mins against Spain I was brilliant. Even if I do say so myself. Got 1 cap. 1 more than most. 1 better than none," Barton boasted.

Barton's decision to "retire" from the national game comes hours after Rio Ferdinand called time on his England career, with the Manchester United defender now commiting himself to club football. The 34-year-old made 81 appearances for England. Joey Barton - take notice.
