Arsenal defender hails character
Arsenal news: Kieran Gibbs praises team spirit at the club
Kieran Gibbs has heaped praise on his Arsenal teammates following the side's recent unbeaten run that sees the Gunners one victory away from securing a 16th consecutive Champions League place.
At the start of the year, many were questioning the club and doubting their chances of finishing in the top-four. But with just one game remaining in the Premier League, their fate is in their own hands.
Since losing to Spurs in the North London derby, Arsene Wenger’s men find themselves on an impressive ten-game unbeaten streak, drawing only two of those fixtures against Everton and champions, Manchester United.
Arsenal thumped Wigan 4-1 at the Emirates on Tuesday night, and Gibbs believes the manner of their victory can spur the side on to finish the season on a high.
Speaking on the club's official website, Gibbs said: “It was all about the win.”
“I thought the performance was, in spells, really good.
“We started well and then they got a foothold in the game unexpectedly, but we showed true character and won the game convincingly in the end.
“We had to be patient. When we came in at half time we had to stay focused and [we knew] we still had 45 minutes to win the game. We took our chances and picked the right moments to get them on the counter-attack.”
Gibbs and co. travel to St. James Park on Sunday knowing three points will see them finish above rivals Tottenham, and the defender knows confidence in the Arsenal camp is high, insisting that the players are ready for the crunch game at Newcastle.
“The fact it has gone down to the wire again shows just how competitive this league is. In January people were saying we were not supposed to be [in the top four].
“The way the squad has stuck together this season and never given up is credit to them and I believe we deserve nothing more than to be where we want to be.
"It is a test we have passed this season and that is credit to the players because it is not easy, especially for those who have come in. It must have been a shock to their systems but they have shown what characters they are."
