On May 19 we will be witnessing the annual WWE Extreme Rules pay-per-view.
This will be the first pay-per-view even since this year’s record-breaking WrestleMania, where we witnessed John Cena defeat The Rock to capture the WWE Championship; whilst The Undertaker extended his legendary streak to 21-0 after finishing off CM Punk.
With over a month of action-packed Raw’s and Smackdown’s; we finally have a decent platform to work off, as the event taking place this Sunday has some brilliant matches on display for the fans to enjoy.
But who will prevail? As always, the WWE is unpredictable; anything can happen.
Will John Cena manage to contain the monster that is Ryback and retain his WWE Championship? Will The SHIELD all walk out with championship belts around their waists? And can Triple H finally put an end to the beat that is Brock Lesnar?
Let’s take a look:
YouTube Pre-Show: Cody Rhodes vs The Miz
Perhaps the most odd match taking place on the night, then again there is a reason we don’t have to pay money to watch this match as it will be available to you live on YouTube before the actual event begins. The Miz captured the United States Championship after defeating England’s Wade Barrett, only to lose it back to him the next night, and since then he has not been as relevant as he and his fans would have hoped.
The same can be said about Cody Rhodes, when he is with Damien Sandow as part of Team Rhodes Scholars, he looks a lot better as he has the charismatic Sandow to lean of for additional support.
At the minute, I would say that the face run for The Miz is not working as well as WWE creative writers would have hoped; although I doubt that the WWE would want a heel to win the opening match and make the fans; especially the children upset.
My prediction: The Miz
Singles Match: Chris Jericho vs Fandango
The popularity has soared through the roof for Fandango, many doubted his dancing gimmick in the build-up to his debut, but he has managed to win over so many fans. So much so, that his theme song even reached #11 in the UK charts, only to settle at #44. Nevertheless Fandango is very charismatic and as a superstar in general; many know that he can actually pull off any gimmick, and so far it is looking good.
His feud with Chris Jericho has seen dance-offs and even a match at the grandest stage of them all where Fandango introduced himself to the world after this massive debut victory. With so much momentum heading into Extreme Rules and with Chris Jericho’s knack of letting the younger talent break through the ranks, I don’t see this going any other way. You also have to consider the fact that Chris may also take some more time off to tour with his band Fozzy, plus with Vince McMahon quite high on Fandango, a loss just does not seem like an option for him.
My prediction: Fandango
Extreme Rules Match: The Big Show vs Randy Orton
The Big Show cannot be trusted, as Randy Orton and Sheamus found out at WrestleMania when The Big Show knocked them both out after The SHIELD got their big victory. Randy Orton and Sheamus did manage to get some sort of revenge on The Big Show after they defeated him in two handicap matches, but then Sheamus’ attention was diverted to another monster.
There is no hiding the fact that Randy Orton is frustrated about not being given the green light to turn heel, his favoured option. To be honest, almost every single fan prefers him as a heel because he is simply that good. I expect Randy Orton to win this match primarily because it would improve Orton’s stature as a face, and slowly but surely just when he is the best face he can be; expect a heel turn. But at Extreme Rules, I am going for an Orton win after an RKO.
My prediction: Randy Orton
Strap Match: Mark Henry vs Sheamus
Mark Henry picked up a mammoth victory over Ryback at WrestleMania, and the next night he unsuccessfully challenged John Cena for the WWE Championship. Since that night, Ryback has firmly established himself as the #w contender to Cena’s WWE Championship, while Sheamus was the one feeling the wrath of The World’s Strongest Man.
Both men have gone back and forth over the course of the last couple of weeks, where we have seen a tug-of-war and an arm wrestle, both times Sheamus hit cheap shots followed by a Brogue Kick on to Henry. But most recently we saw Mark Henry whip Sheamus’ back with a belt which looked as if it did cause some harm. Their match at Extreme Rules is now a strap match, and I believe Mark Henry will get the victory via pin-fall, as the WWE will look to build him back up as the ultimate monster, and challenging John Cena for the strap down the line.
My prediction: Mark Henry
WWE Tag Team Championships – Tornado Tag: Team Hell No! [Daniel Bryan and Kane] vs The SHIELD [Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns]
The SHIELD are possibly the most exciting thing that has happened to the WWE in recent years, their group is unorthodox as unlike previous stables, The SHIELD has no leader, they are all equals and fighting for one cause, they are a shield against all injustice in the WWE, and now it looks like they are finally getting the push they deserve.
Ever since their introduction in the 2012 Survivor Series, The SHIELD has become one of the most formidable teams in recent history. They have steamrolled past the likes of John Cena, Randy Orton, Sheamus Ryback and we cannot forget The Rock; their shot at the tag team championships could not have come sooner. The fact that they are technically unbeaten in the ring will give them a slight advantage in fans eyes, and that includes myself; I think Team Hell No’s reign as Tag Team Champions will come to an end as Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns will team up to make sure we all begin to believe in The SHIELD.
My prediction: New Tag Team Champions: The SHIELD
WWE United States Championship: Kofi Kingston vs Dean Ambrose
With Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns taking on Team Hell No, that leaves only Dean Ambrose and what a chance he has to make his mark in the WWE. It is no secret that Dean Ambrose is the most charismatic out of the trio, and definitely the best on the microphone, so rightfully he should be the one who goes for the United States Champion.
Just like The SHIELD, Ambrose is unbeaten as part of the stable and once again I don’t think that he will be losing this match, Kofi captured the United States Champion off Antonio Cesaro however his reign as champion will be short-lived. As I have mentioned, the era of The SHIELD has begun and it will continue by Dean Ambrose taking the United States Championship.
My prediction: New United States Champion: Dean Ambrose
#1 Contender’s I Quit Match: Alberto Del Rio vs Jack Swagger
On the night after WrestleMania; Dolph Ziggler shocked the world by cashing in his money in the bank briefcase and pinning Alberto Del Rio to be crowned the new World Heavyweight Champion, Jack Swagger continued to impede Del Rio’s challenges for a rematch and Booker T opted to make it a triple threat match at Extreme Rules, where Alberto Del Rio picked the ladder match as a stipulation.
Unfortunately for us fans, there will be no Dolph Ziggler in sight, he received a concussion after Jack Swagger had hit him with a ladder, and the doctor’s have not cleared him to compete, especially in a ladder match. Instead we will have to make do with another match between Alberto Del Rio and Jack Swagger, a WrestleMania 29 rematch but this time in an I Quit match. This match could actually go either way depending on the direction the writers want to go in, if Del Rio wins then it will be the typical heel versus face feud, but if Swagger wins then they will both remain heels but the fans actually love Ziggler; heel or face and the history that these two have could also come into play. However with Jack Swagger’s arrest before WrestleMania, I doubt they will let him challenge Ziggler for the Championship.
My prediction: Alberto Del Rio
Steel Cage Match: Brock Lesnar vs Triple H
SummerSlam 2012 saw Brock Lesnar defeat Triple H and many questioned whether The Game would return to compete, he did return and managed to get Brock Lesnar into the ring at WrestleMania 29; only for Lesnar and his manager Paul Heyman to manipulate the stipulations and put Triple H’s career on the line in their no holds barred match.
Triple H won that match and thought he was free from Brock Lesnar; it is never that easy with Lesnar. With the score levelled at 1-1 Paul Heyman issued one final challenge to Triple H, at Extreme Rules he must take on Brock Lesnar, inside a steel cage. Triple H accepted and over the past few weeks on Monday Night Raw we have seen altercations between Paul Heyman and Triple H, as well as Heyman and Lesnar visiting his office and trashing everything in it. This past week we finally got to see Brock Lesnar appear on Raw, as he and Triple H battled it out with Triple H getting the upper hand. With Lesnar limited to a number of appearances, I doubt he would want to lose two matches in a row, and he will be handed this win.
My prediction: Brock Lesnar
WWE Championship – Last Man Standing Match: John Cena vs Ryback
Last year was not the next of years for John Cena, his personal life was in the media and he wasn’t as great inside the ring, starting with a confidence-killing loss to The Rock at WrestleMania 28, falling victim to many attacks from The SHIELD and not managing to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase against CM Punk, the first person ever to fail; he finally got his redemption after he won the Royal Rumble in January, and beat The Rock in their rematch a year after they battled it out the first time.
John Cena faces one of the biggest tests of his life as he will take on Ryback, who does look unstoppable. Ryback attacked John Cena after he defeated Mark Henry the night after WrestleMania and he made his intentions clear, he wants the WWE Championship. With Ryback finally getting his wish he and Cena traded blows for a number of weeks but it will come down to this Sunday, where only one man will be left standing. This again, is a difficult choice to make, I don’t think they would want John Cena to look so unconvincing by losing his WWE Championship so quickly, and I don’t think they want Ryback to lose to John Cena either. I am saying this will be an odd finish, and that it will end up as a draw; resulting in John Cena retaining his WWE Championship.
My prediction: Still WWE Champion: John Cena
