For Chelsea, succeeding in the Europa league final is a success as far as winning a competitive match, but that is as far as it goes.
Beneath the banners and jubilant Blues supporters is an underlining issue that this time last year they were in the final of the most coveted cup competition globally.
The last gasp winner to grab the Europa league trophy is nothing more than an indication of how much Chelsea have declined in the last year and how much they are in need of stability.
Rather than boasting of being champions of both European cups at once surely they should be asking the question of what a pathetic reclaim of their Champion’s League trophy they’ve made, and how they crashed out of the qualification stage with a whimper – the first Champions League holders ever to do so.
Whereas other finalists from last year Bayern Munich have kicked on from where they left off - once again preparing for the final and are firm favourites to be successful.
On reflection Bayern Munich would have been winners last year but lady luck was with Chelsea, something they perhaps haven’t had this year.
But, call me cynical I would suggest you make your own luck and with Roman Abramovich at the helm - I strongly believe luck is something they will find hard to come by.
A clear out of players is needed and a manager with enough resilience not to be shunted by Roman is a must, otherwise they could again fail in the Champions League next season and have to defend their Europa League title.
