Tottenham to battle Chelsea for Premier League starlet

Tottenham are ready to take on Chelsea in the battle to sign Southampton youngster Luke Shaw this summer according to the Times.

Shaw, a product of Southampton's famed youth academy which has produced the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain over the years,  has enjoyed a successful maiden Premier League campaign, racking up 23 appearances.

The 17-year-old has reportedly been a target for Chelsea for some time, but now the Times claim Spurs have entered the race for his signature.

The north London club reportedly want to land Shaw as a replacement for Benoit Assou-Ekotto, who could be sold this summer after a dissapointing campaign at left-back.

The paper reports that Tottenham hope to take advantage of the uncertainty that surrounds St. Mary's at present. Chairman Nicola Cortese is said to be contemplating stepping down from his position after clashing with the Liebherr family trust which run the club.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino insisted yesterday he would walk out of the door should Cortese leave, a sentiment echoed by midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

Despite Tottenham's interest, the Times say Chelsea are still favourites to land the talented youngster.

The Blues are said to be unsure over the potential of Ryan Bertrand and his ability to be Ashley Cole's long-term successor.

The fact Shaw has revealed in the past that he is a Chelsea fan may see him edge towards Stamford Bridge over White Hart Lane should the opportunity arise.
