Frank Lampard: Jose Mourinho return would be huge lift

.

Frank Lampard claims Jose Mourinho's seemingly imminent return as Chelsea manager would provide a significant fillip for the club, and hopes it would transform the Blues into Premier League title contenders once more.

Mourinho looks destined to arrive back at Stamford Bridge following the conclusion of the current season, having endured a testing campaign at Real Madrid where his relationship with players and fans has soured.

The 50-year-old is reported to have already agreed to come back as Chelsea manager during the summer months, although Roman Abramovich has yet to activate the release clause written into Mourinho's contract with Real Madrid.

Mourinho won two Premier League titles during his three-year first spell with Chelsea and, in his absence, the Blues have claimed just one further championship, coming during the tenure of Carlo Ancelotti.

Lampard is hopeful he can be reunited with the Portuguese next season, having just signed a one-year contract extension with Chelsea, and believes Mourinho can instil the mentality of title contenders - something missing at the club at present.

"If Jose comes back it will be a huge lift for the club," Lampard told The Mirror. "It's no secret that he's an idol for the fans for what he's done.

"He's the greatest manager in our history and he changed the whole belief of the club and made us into a winning club. It will lift the fans, and I know it will lift the players.

"When we won under Jose before we got criticised for the fact that we were so dogged - but we must certainly get back to being a bit more dogged.

"It doesn't mean taking away the beautiful football because when you have the players we have, three number ten types who are so versatile, then you have to cater for that and get them into your team to win games.

"But you have to have a balance. Those who haven't worked with him before will understand that he'll come in and give them an extra edge. Hopefully that will take us back to being that consistent force."
