Manchester United are among a host of European clubs put on red alert over the availability of Thiago Alcantara.
The Daily Mail claims Barcelona are willing to sell the 22-year-old midfielder for £20million this summer, with both Manchester City and Bayern Munich also keen on the player.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been a fan of Alcantara for several years, with a £12million offer from the Red Devils rejected less than 24 months ago.
The Scot will not be at the Manchester United helm this summer however, meaning new boss David Moyes will have to make the transfer decisions at Old Trafford.
Alcantara would add a touch of Spanish style to the Red Devils midfield if he signed for the Premier League champions, but beating the club’s rivals won’t be easy.
Manchester City are being linked with a number of midfielders, despite their lack of a manager following Roberto Mancini’s departure at the start of the week.
The paper reports that Jesus Navas is another name on the Citizens transfer radar, with Fernandinho and Geoffrey Kondogbia also mentioned as targets.
Sporting Director Txiki Begiristain is sure to know Alcantara from his time at the Nou Camp, and the youngster would be another transfer coup at the Etihad Stadium if Manchester City can persuade him to join.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, have a major advantage in the shape of their new manager – former Barca chief Pep Guardiola.
Alcantara’s agent is also Pere Guardiola – the brother of Pep – but the signing of Mario Gotze may mean that there is too much competition for the player at the Allianz Arena.
Time will tell over which club makes the first move, but there could be a huge transfer battle on the agenda this summer.
