Arsene Wenger has moved to extinguish speculation that Arsenal are interested in signing Wayne Rooney during the summer transfer window, claiming there has been no approach for the Manchester United striker.

Reports on Friday claimed the Gunners were monitoring the situation of Rooney after it was revealed the 27-year-old had submitted a transfer request last weekend, which was rejected by Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Rooney had been omitted from the matchday squad to face Swansea at Old Trafford last weekend following his decision to ask to leave, but the soon to be departures manager insisted Manchester United would not sell the England international.

This, however, has failed to dampen suggestions Rooney could leave Manchester United in the summer, with Arsenal and Chelsea both being credited with interest in the former Everton trainee.

Wenger was asked at a press conference on Friday if Arsenal had approached Manchester United to gauge the situation of Rooney, but the Frenchman claims not to have been in touch with the Premier League champions.

"At the moment we have no interest in anybody. We have only one interest, which is of course Sunday's game," said the Arsenal boss.

"I don't know if Man United will sell Rooney and that is the best sign to show you we have not made any approach for him because the first move is to contact Manchester United, which we did not do. At the moment we are focused on Sunday."
