Real Madrid suffer Copa del Rey final defeat as Ronaldo sees red

Joao Miranda thumped home an extra-time winner as Atletico Madrid secured a 2-1 win over Real Madrid to claim the Copa del Rey trophy as both Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo saw red.

Real Madrid came into the final hoping to maintain an imperious record against their noisy neighbours stretching back to 14 years and they looked on course to do so when they struck first on 14 minutes.

Ozil floating in a corner for Ronaldo to attack as the ball sailed into the far corner gave Real Madrid the lead.

However, Atletico responded and despite failing to even test the Madrid keeper, Diego Lopez, they eventually made the pressure count on 35 minutes.

The effervescent Falcao twisted and turned on the halfway line before sending a sublime through ball into the path of the dangerous Costa. The Brazilian took a controlling touch and out sprung a low shot beyond Diego Lopez that crashed in off the far post for his eight goal of this season's Copa del Rey.

The goal seemed to make the game more open and both teams were running riot for a passage of play. However, it was Real Madrid that had the most pressure coming up to the end of the first half and should have doubled their lead with Ozil narrowly missing the net.

After the break, it was still Los Blancos' game as Benzema's shot cannoned off the post from a smart cut back from Ronaldo. Again, it was Ozil who was the most danger with another shot on target but a delightful goal line clearance from JuanFran saw the scores remain level.

For the third time that match, Real Madrid hit the post with Ronaldo firing a testing free-kick which came back to Essien off the post who blazed it over.

It was Real Madrid's game for the taking. The frustration brew to the maximum and Mourinho let out all of his frustration on the officials causing him to only give instructions from the bench.

Atletico had barely had a glimpse of goal with the onslaught from Real Madrid, but somehow got to extra-time.

And they seemed to gain a second wind from the restart, stunning the Bernabeu by snatching the lead on 99 minutes when Miranda leapt and pounced onto a near post header to guide a fabulous in coming ball from Koke into the net.

Real Madrid with all the desperation they had tried to come back forcing Courtois into making to fantastic saves closing in on full-time.

The disparity and frustration was etched all over the Los Blanco’s fans' faces with time running out and not having your key player, Ronaldo who lashed out on Atletico's Gabi was given a straight red.

A historic night for Atletico Madrid as they won the Copa Del Rey beating their neighbours, whereas a less memorable night for Jose Mourinho and his troops.

After the match a bitter Mourinho told reporters: "This was the worst season of my career. I don't think Atletico deserve to be champions but they won the title. We had two clear chances on goal, we hit the post three times...this is why I think it is unfair"

Mourinho still undecided on his future has now a massive step to make. Surely, this defeat and a trophy less season is a big indication of a change in direction.
