Tottenham have counter-attacking abilities which can destroy opposition defences in few seconds.

Andre Villas-Boas has brought possession based football into Spurs, and the counter-attacking methods remain a treat to viewer.

Lack of firepower upfront has been an area of concern for Spurs. Their strong defensive layout and the dynamism in midfield also need a proper strike front to take them further up in world football.

Furthermore, Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe weren’t up-to their mark this season which increased the need to bolster their attacking ranks.

Barcelona’s David Villa and Real Madrid star Gonzalo Higuain are being linked to Spurs to solve their striking conundrum. Spurs tactician is an admirer of Villa and his clinical finishing skills. Spurs have a bid in place for Spain’s leading goal scorer as well. He can be used as a wide forward, even though he is more effective as a central forward.

Are Tottenham targeting the right player for their system? David Villa might be a suitable possession based player, but his role was peripheral this season. He might have scored truck loads of goals in the past, but his contribution in current season has been a paltry nine goals in La Liga. At 31-years-old, he is surely a player past his prime, and troubled by injuries. He might be effective in a short passing game with quick one-two’s. But will he be able to hold the ball on his own, in a physical Premier League?

On the other hand Gonzalo Higuain gives Spurs a number of options. He is a vital cog in Real Madrid’s dangerous counter attacking game.

He can hold the ball in his feet or release his colleagues for a quick counter attack. Higuain can easily sharpen the counter attacks along with Bale and Lennon. Spurs have mastered the art of long shots recently and Higuain does possess a deadly shot in his armoury. His physical presence can be utilized in the box and this will get the best out of the lightning wingers in Spurs.

Villa is reaching the end of his career and his future doesn’t look bright even in national team setup. Higuain is about to hit his peak and Spurs can make profit out of him even if he doesn’t click at White Hart Lane.

The same cannot be assured with Villa as he is on a downward spiral. Higuain contributes to the team’s defence but Villa cannot be entrusted with defensive responsibilities.

Spurs playing style is far better suited to Higuain than Villa, and with age on his side Higuain can definitely fly into Premier League’s elite.
