Chelsea are confident they have beaten rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Southampton starlet Luke Shaw.

According to the Sunday Times, the Stamford Bridge club believe they have done enough to convince the exciting young left-back to opt for them over Spurs and the Gunners.

Despite the expected capture of £10million-rated Shaw, the report claims Chelsea will still make significant funds available for the incoming manager Jose Mourinho to spend on his preferred targets.

The 17-year-old is said to be a long-term target of Chelsea scouts and they see him as possibly being a prominent member of the Blues squad for years to come.

Shaw is the latest star product from the Southampton youth academy, which also produced the likes of Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the past.

Southampton will not want to lose Shaw after he excelled during their successful bid to stay in the Premier League following promotion, but Saints have always found it difficult to hold onto their best young talent.

Bale eventually moved to White Hart Lane and has become one of the most feared attackers in Europe – he swept the board of Player of the Year awards this season.

Meanwhile, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have become integral members of both the Arsenal and England squads.

Arsenal and Spurs were always facing an uphill task against Chelsea in the race to sign Sahw, as he was a Blues fan growing up.
