Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny has revealed that it was vital for the club to finish above Tottenham and qualify for next year's Champions League.
The race for the top-four went down to the final day of the season yesterday and it was the Gunners who pipped their north London rivals after a nervy ending to both matches.
Arsenal travelled the St James Park to face Newcastle United knowing that a win would give them Champions League football next season, but if they slipped up, Tottenham were ready to pounce as they hosted Sunderland at White Hart Lane.
The first goal of the game between the two came in the second-half and it took place at Newcastle and it was Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny that got the goal. The Frenchman also scored the goal last season that put Arsenal into the Champions League.
After that goal, there was only one other and that was from Gareth Bale at White Hart Lane, so it meant that both teams won 1-0 which meant it was the Gunners that finished in fourth place.
The goalscorer for Arsenal has spoken out about the importance of the win and believes the game was very similar to the one that took place last year at the Hawthorns when they beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2.
Koscielny told reporters:“We are happy to finish the last game with a win.
“It is very important for the club to be in the Champions League.
“It was like last year. This goal was important. The team played well and gave themselves for the team.
"We are all good players and we want to play Champions League. It is a big competition. We did the job and we are happy.”
