Moussa Dembele is often considered as a technical midfielder possessing excellent passing and dribbling abilities.
Dembele remained an influential figure in Andre Villas-Boas’ Spurs set up ever since he replaced Croatian Luka Modric in the central midfield.
Dembele can be seen vigorously moving around in the middle of park dictating the flow of Spurs game himself.
Dembele possesses excellent dribbling and shielding capabilities, which came as a result of occupying the attacking midfielder/support striker role earlier.
He has used his technical and creative skills in his role in a manner, which makes him natural to his new position. He has mixed versatility and discipline to make his own version of a central midfielder that does his job without much fuss, fulfilling the defensive and attacking responsibilities with ease and professionalism.
Dembele’s stellar performances have often gone unnoticed even after pulling the strings so elegantly. As often the case, it required his absence to prove his worth.
When Dembele missed the home game against Chelsea, Spurs were overrun in the midfield as his vital defensive contributions and creative play went missing.
Most of the game bypassed Spurs midfield and the dynamic midfielder’s absence was among the primary reasons behind this abject display. Lilywhites feared the absence of Dembele whenever he was in doubt for the upcoming game.
Dembele’s value cannot be measured in terms of goals or assists. He contributes before that, he foresees the movement of other players and runs the game with his vision.
His contributions are mainly in the build up thanks to his creativity and passing abilities. His ability to up the tempo with a sudden burst of speed or close dribbling is a real difference maker in the build up.
The dynamic Belgian is a man of steel when it comes to contributions in defence; his reading of the game enables him to be in the right place at the right time for crucial interceptions and vital clearances.
He isn’t afraid to stick a foot or two in the midfield battle for supremacy.
With Dembele around, players like Sandro, Sigurdsson or even Parker seems in a different level. He knows how to get the best out of his colleagues and he shapes up his game accordingly.
His mobility and quick feet gets the best out other player’s abilities as well. With a passing accuracy of 91%, he is a vital cog in keeping possession and the style of play AVB adapts in Tottenham Hotspur. His tackling success ratio of 84% is an indicator of his all-round abilities.
Moussa Dembele might be an underrated player in many eyes. But he is evolving into a modern central midfielder who performs his duties at both ends of the pitch admirably well.
When Dembele plays well, Spurs can outplay any opposition and that is what the Spurs fans across the world are looking forward to.
