Dutch star hits 35-yard thunderbolt free-kick in play-off

Published 4 Comments

Holland’s Eredivisie always provides excitement at the end of the season with the Europa League play-offs and this year one of them witnessed a goal of spectacular quality.

While many teams, especially in the Premier League, find it difficult to get excited about the prospect of the Europa League, teams in Holland receive a big financial boost from being in the competition.

This is why there is so much excitement when the teams that finished fifth to eighth take part in the end of season play-off for the privilege of getting in the competition.

One of this year’s clashes, between Utrecht and Heerenveen, produced a strike that will be remembered for years to come.

Utrecht has won the first leg 1-0 and were looking for an early goal to help finish off the tie at their home ground – step forward midfielder Jens Toornstra.

There were only nine minutes on the clock when the 24-year-old Dutchman decided to hit a speculative free-kick form fully 35 yards – boy, did he hit it.

Toornstra’s strike went like a rocket off his right boot and crashed into the top corner off the underside of the crossbar.

It was a strike of supreme quality and Heerenveen were suitably rattled, going down 2-1 in the game, thanks to another Toornstra goal, and losing the tie 3-1 on aggregate.

Utrecht will now go on to meet FC Twente in the play-off final, the latter side overcoming Groningen with ease.

Watch Jens Toornstra’s 35-yard thunderbolt free-kick above and enjoy.
