Manchester City's 3-1 defeat at Champions League chasing Tottenham left United just one win away from reclaiming their Premier League crown. Aston Villa would be the visitors for a Monday night game that will go down in history as the day Sir Alex Ferguson won his final trophy as Manchester United manager.
A hat-trick from Robin van Persie sealed United's 13th Premier League title and Rooney's fifth, and although the Dutchman stole the show, Rooney played his part too.
Having started the move which lead to the opening goal, Rooney then picked out his strike partner with a searching pass that Van Persie expertly volleyed home for number two.
