Kevin Pietersen has spent the day gearing up for the Ashes as he looks to win his race against time to be fit for the first test in July.

The England batsman has been sidelined with a knee injury since March, and has been forced to sit out the IPL as well as England's home test series against New Zealand which got underway last week.

The 32-year-old has kept his fans in the loop through updates via social media websites as he attempts to make it back in time for the first Ashes test, which gets underway at Trent Bridge on July 10.

Pietersen, who will also miss the Champions Trophy which in June, shared this picture of himself in a photo-shoot in preparation for the Ashes - but England bowling coach David Saker says it remains unclear over whether the South African-born batsman will be ready in time to take on the Aussies.

"He was really excited about the Ashes, but he said he is still not sure," said Saker.

"I just asked him if he thought he would be all right and he said he thinks he will. It was probably the only answer he could give. He doesn't know.

"Until he knows he can run around and it doesn't flare up, he can't have an answer on that. He hopes he will be ready."

Andy Flower's men got their summer of cricket off to a good start with victory by 170 runs in the first of two tests against New Zealand at Lord's on Sunday.

England go into the Ashes this summer looking to win the series for the third time in a row - a feat they haven't achieved since 1981.
