With the impending transfer window Arsenal shouldn’t be wasting time and money on their central defence.

In Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen Arsenal already have three world-class defenders.

Club captain Vermaelen hasn’t been at his best this season but he is still up there with the top defenders and it is no wonder that Spanish giants Barcelona are keen on luring the Belgian to the Camp Nou.

Nevertheless, when Wenger decided to bench his captain and give Koscielny and Mertesacker the responsibility at the back, the pair performed exceptionally.

The Frenchman and German have been rock solid in the last few months of Arsenal’s 2012/13 campaign and were largely creditable for the Gunners’ solid run that saw them grab a top four spot ahead of rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

They were the only centre-back pair to keep a clean sheet against German giants Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena this season. Apart from the clean sheet in Germany, Arsenal went unbeaten for ten games after that and, incredibly, the pair didn’t concede a goal from open play in their last eight league games. Where Arsenal do need to improve is in set pieces, but this can be rectified during the summer.

With stiff competition between the three current centre backs, all three will perform to their utmost ability to keep their place. Koscielny was particularly good during the latter part of the season and is now considered one of the best defenders in the league.

The France international and his lanky partner in defence complement each other remarkably well. Koscielny’s pace and agility makes up for Mertesacker’s lack of it and the German’s ability to read the game as well as his 6’6” frame is vital in keeping out aerial threats.

Arsenal have been linked to the likes of Swansea’s Ashley Williams and, although a very good defender and leader, Arsenal simply don’t need him. Instead Wenger should be focusing on purchasing a quality right back if Sagna leaves. A good option would be Borussia Dortmund’s Lukasz Piszczek or Sochaux’s Sebastien Corchia.

Furthermore, Wenger should acquire a good defensive midfielder such as Lyon’s Maxime Gonalons or Ettiene Capoue; and strengthen his attack with options such as Stevan Jovetic, Gonzalo Higuain or Christian Benteke.
