Manchester United and Barcelona have been alerted to the availability of Thomas Vermaelen after it was revealed that Arsenal will listen to offers of as little as £5million for their captain, reports The Sun.

The 27-year-old defender has fallen down the first-team pecking order in north London, with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker the preferred choice pairing for much of the season.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is ready to let the Belgian international leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, and are willing to take a £5million hit on a player they paid Ajax £10million for his services in 2009.

Barcelona have been credited with an interest in bringing Vermaelen to the Camp Nou, as Tito Vilanova looks to strengthen his back line ahead of the 2013/14 campaign.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have also been previously linked with the Arsenal skipper - a move that could see Vermaelen follow in the footsteps of Robin van Persie, who made the controversial switch to Old Trafford last summer in a reported £24million deal.

Vermaelen remains under contract at Arsenal until 2015, and is determined to stay and fight for his place in Wenger's first-team.

But, with speculation suggesting that the Frenchman is looking to add Swansea centre-back Ashley Williams to his ranks when the transfer window reopens in July, he could face even more competition for regular football next season.
