Real Madrid’s president confirmed that Jose Mourinho would be leaving Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the current season and set to end his spell in La Liga following a trophy-less season.
We take a look at some of the highlights from his time at the Real Madrid Helm when he took over back in May 2010.
2010-11 - Mourinho started his career with a 0-0 draw against RCD Mallorca with Real Madrid, after that game Real Madrid won every game quite impressively.
However, the first game against main rivals Barcelona did not go down very well when Mourinhio and his men lost 5-0. The club president Perez was not very pleased with it and branded it as the worst game in the history of Real Madrid and sporting director Valdano criticized his '”inability to bring major corrections to the game.”
In April 2011 Mourinho lifted his first piece of silver ware with the blancos as they won Copa del Rey beating arch-rivals Barcelona to it. During the same month they lost to Barcelona in the Champions League fixture after Mourinho was sent to the stands for protesting Pepe's red card and away leg was a 1 - 1 draw, which resulted in their elimination.
2011-12 - Mourinho was confident that the Blancos would improve under him and he got it spot on, not only they defeated Barcelona in an away fixture, but also clinched the tittle with highest number of points with 100 point, scoring 121 goals in the process.
Sadly they were knocked out of Copa del Rey quarter-finals by Barcelona and were eliminated against Bayern Munich in Champions League semi-final.
It was just not Mourinho's achievement that attracted attention, but also his antics.
The Special One attracted a lot of controversy after appearing to poke then Barcelona assistant manager Tito Vilanova in the eye which led to a two match touch line ban.
2012-13 - By far the worst season for Mourinho at Real Madrid in his three year tenure. The Special One conceded defeat to the arch rivals Barcelona by the end of Christmas while trailing to them by 16 points. The team were also eliminated in Champions League by Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final. After losing the first leg 4-1. Real Madrid saw the season ending with out a trophy after they lost 2-1 to their local rivals Atletico Madrid in the final of Copa del Rey.
Apart from these setbacks, there were also reports of dressing room rifts over the axing of the club's long-serving goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
