Rio Ferdinand signs new Manchester United contract

.

Rio Ferdinand has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United.

The 34-year-old has made 432 appearances since joining the Red Devils from Leeds in 2002.

“I am delighted to have signed a new contract," said the defender. Who wouldn’t want to play in this fantastic team in front of 75,000 fans each week, it has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue.

"I can now fully concentrate on my club career, which has worked well for me over the past few years”

“This is a great team to be part of and we are now moving into a new era with the club which is very exciting.  I have met with David I am really looking forward to working with him and winning many more trophies with this great club”.

Ferdinand helped the Red Devils claim their 13th and final Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson this season, and was also named in the PFA Team of the Year to cap a fine year on the pitch for the former West Ham man.

New Manchester United manager David Moyes, who will officially start his role as Ferguson's successor next month, said he is pleased to have the former England international on board when he takes over at Old Trafford.

“It is clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club," the Scot said. "And I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room so I am delighted he has signed a new contract and I am looking forward to working with him.”
