Liverpool target Bundesliga defender in €16m move

Liverpool have made a €16million offer for Greek international defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, according to reports.

Spanish paper El Mundo Deportivo claims the Reds are scouring the market for a replacement for Jamie Carragher, and have set their sights on the Schalke centre back.

Carragher called time on his 17-year professional career last week, leaving a huge hole at Anfield for manager Brendan Rodgers to fill.

The paper goes on to claim that the Reds have already made contact with Papadopoulos’ father, with the Merseyside outfit looking to beat Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City to the signing.

Despite being just 21, the former Olympiakos centre back has earned 16 caps for his country, scoring four goals in the process.

He’s also played in both the Champions League and the Europa League, making the youngster an attractive option to Rodgers as he looks to add strength in defence.

Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates are the only senior options available to the Liverpool boss, with the later yet to find his best form for the Premier League club.

Papadopoulos would add some strong competition, and also continue the policy of bringing bright young prospects to the club.
