Ecuadorian defender sent off for kung-fu high kick

Published 5 Comments

As Nani cruelly found out in the Champions League, a high foot is not tolerated in the beautiful game.

So it was no surprise to see this awful kung-fu style high kick by El Nacional defender Javier Chila punished with a straight red card.

To be fair, it may have been a touch unlucky. Chila was clearly trying to smash the ball clear, but missed it and his textbook straight-legged follow-through almost took of his opponent’s head.

Barcelona’s Ariel Nahuelpan, the player on the wrong end of the kick, didn’t cover himself in glory either, pushing Chila to the ground angrily.

But I suppose when you see a boot flying through the air at head height you’re not going to be best pleased.

So, if you were the referee what action would you have taken?
