Burak Yilmaz has played for all the “four giants” in Turkish football.
Galatarasay’s top scorer had an impressive campaign in both Super Lig and the Champions League, outshining the likes of Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder in the process.
The former Fenerbahce, Besiktas, and Trabzonspor player set the Champions League alight by matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal tally at one stage. He was the joint top scorer until the quarter-final stage, where his team was knocked out by Real Madrid, following his suspension in the second leg.
Burak was the focal point of Galatarasay's attacks and coach Fathih Terim compared him to Ukranian Legend Andriy Shevchenko, noticing their similarity as late bloomers.
He has been a target of English Premier League clubs for some time now. Earlier Tottenham and Liverpool were tracking the forward, but a move to Galatarasay last summer reduced their interest.
His performances this season seemed to have increased his reputation, his market price and the number of suitors. It is rumored that Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are also following the developments of the Champions League star.
It is believed that the Chelsea management are fed up of the performances from Fernando Torres and Demba Ba - and they are in pursuit of a striker to lead their campaign in next season.
Radamel Falcao was one of their prime targets, but the Atletico Madrid star is rumored to be on his way to Monaco. Turkish Super Lig striker Burak Yilmaz is a comparatively cheaper option and has proved himself, by performing in the biggest competition in European club football, as an ideal choice for the club.
Burak is a tall and athletic player, but he isn’t suited to the wing role. His crossing abilities aren’t great and he is at his best when deployed as a lone striker. He has been often undermined as a player who performed above his abilities, due to the wonderful service he got from his teammates.
The Turkey international is considered as a counter-attacking player, as he found more success as a lone striker in 4-5-1 formation. He is deadly in one-on-one situations and he isn’t afraid to take on defenders.
His athleticism makes him an ideal presence upfront, as he puts pressure on opposition defences. In the last two seasons, he has developed into a top-class striker and with age on his stride, he can make it even bigger.
For the last two seasons running, Burak is the top scorer of the Turkish Super Lig. His performances in Champions League have been deadly. Even though he moved to Galatarasay just in 2012, his continental performance has grabbed the attention of big clubs once again, and they are hopeful of securing a deal with the 27-year-old.
If Chelsea aren't sure about Romelu Lukaku’s ability to lead them in multiple competitions - at least for the next season or two - and are considering loaning him out again to gain more experience and exposure, and with Torres and Ba misfiring, they are in dire need of an additional striker.
If the performances of Burak Yilmaz in previous seasons are an indicator, Chelsea must set their sights rightly on the Turkey star.
It remains to be seen whether he can solve the striking conundrum at Chelsea.
