Mario Mandzukic loses Champions League medal during celebrations

Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic had a shock to the system last night, after briefly thinking he'd lost his Champions League winners medal during title celebrations at Wembley.

No sooner had the Croatian international been handed his gold plated award and draped it around his neck, the disk separated from the ribbon and disappeared out of sight amid the scenes of jubilation.

Thankfully Franck Ribery was there to catch the falling medal for Mandzukic, who re-presented the accolade to his relieved looking team-mate.

Mandzukic played an instrumental part in Saturday night's 2-1 victory over Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund, opening the scoring in the 61st minute with a close-range goal.

Ilkay Gundogan restored parity from the penalty spot nine minutes later, but it was Jupp Heynckes's side that went on to claim the European Cup after Arjen Robben's late winner.

The Dutchman made up for last year's spot-kick miss in the corresponding final defeat against Chelsea in 2012 by grabbing the goal that etched Bayern's name on the trophy this time around.

Breaking clear through the middle of Dortmund's defence, Robben latched onto a perfectly-weighted Ribery pass before cleverly slotting past the outrushing Roman Weidenfeller to send the Bavarian fans into raptures.
