The news of Neymar’s signing for Barcelona was publicised over the weekend, with an official statement from the Spanish club reading: “Neymar, who announced the news on Twitter and Instagram, will play for Barca for the next five seasons”.
Neymar is anticipated to expand the capabilities of the Barcelona attack through a spectacular partnership with Lionel Messi upfront next season.
Plainly, only a good relation between these two players - on and off the pitch - will make this happen, but they can only be tightly linked to each other if they share the same values and characteristics.
In the past, however, Neymar has shown some wayward attitudes, putting into question his humility – which will be a key aspect he will need to exhibit in order to integrate himself smoothly in Barcelona.
More recently, as a result of his nature, many Barca supporters – including legend Johan Cruyff – have opposed themselves to the idea of having both Messi and Neymar in the same team.
Yet, in spite of the 21-year-old’s supposed ego, Barcelona defender Martin Montoya is confident that Neymar will quickly learn to cope with the Argentine goalscoring machine.
“These things [like possible conflicts between both of them] are said in the press. [But] Leo is a great person. If Neymar behaves well, he will get along with Messi. Leo gets along with everyone," Montoya said according to Marca.
Once Neymar finds comfort in training with his new team-mates, then manager Tito Vilanova will be faced with the challenge of fusing attacking movements in a new dimension, so as to make use of the Brazilian’s unique talent.
Nonetheless, whereas Montoya maintains that being at ease with everybody’s style of play at Barcelona will help Neymar find the reassurance he needs, the Spaniard stressed that adapting to Lionel Messi’s game is actually what the newcomer will have to focus on.
"The main master [at Barcelona] is Messi," he added. "Neymar has to adapt to the team and especially to Messi."
