Tottenham begin talks with Barcelona star
Tottenham & Barcelona transfer news: Andre Villas-Boas lines up £12 million move for David Villa
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas is said to have opened talks with Barcelona hit-man David Villa and is optimistic of luring the striker to White Hart Lane this summer.
The Spain international has long been on Spurs’ radar and it is reported that they are leading the chase for Villa. The Mirror reports that Villas-Boas is hoping that his personal relationship with the forward would facilitate the negotiations and give him an edge over the other interested parties.
Liverpool and Arsenal have shown interest in the Spaniard but Arsenal seem to have switched their attention to the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Christian Benteke as their front man targets while Liverpool also seem to have cooled their interest in luring the 31-year-old to Anfield.
Spurs are therefore in pole position for Villa’s signature and the fact that the out-of-favour forward will be looking for first team football in what is a World Cup year, should help the north London club’s cause. Villa has been warming the bench at the Catalan club for most of the 2012/13 season and will be desperate for consistent first team football to prove that he still has what it takes to play for his country in Brazil next year.
Although Tottenham failed to qualify for the Champions League they are still hopeful of landing big names and Villa currently tops the list. Barcelona have reportedly allowed Villa to exit the Camp Nou in the summer provided that their £12m valuation is met.
The Mirror also reports that Spurs will be looking for two big name strikers this summer to launch their campaign for a top four spot next season. The other name on AVB’s list is Leandro Damiao. Spurs expressed interest in the Brazilian during the January transfer window and seemed to have renewed endeavours to bring Damiao to London. They are also keeping tabs on Juventus’ Mirko Vucinic in case dealings for the first two strikers fall through.
The White Hart Lane club look set to hold on to their talismanic Welsh winger Gareth Bale despite interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United and the Welshman would certainly be key to the club’s hopes of getting that coveted Champions League qualification for 2014/15.
