Steve Ganson sorry for video error in Hull derby
Video referee apologises for mistake in Hull derby
Video referee Steve Ganson has apologised for his wrong decision that helped settle the Magic Weekend clash between Hull FC and Hull KR.
Ganson, in control of the video screens in the Hull derby, decided that Chris Green was not offside before scoring a decisive tie.
Hull FC ended up winning 22-16 in dramatic fashion with Ganson's decision having a massive impact on the outcome.
Ganson failed to see that Green was in-front of Danny Houghton when the hooker kicked the ball and wasn't passed by Houghton meaning he was never in an onside position.
Jon Sharp, head of match officials, released a statement on behalf of the Rugby Football League stating that it's: "clear that Steve made the wrong call.
"Honesty and accountability are important to the Match Officials Department and we can only apologise for the error.
"Steve has been in contact with Hull Kingston Rovers and offered his apologies. He is one of the sport's most experienced officials and deeply regrets having got it wrong." It said in the statement.
However, Hull KR boss Craig Sandercock was understandably irate about the decision and demanded Ganson apologises publicly."It's a tragedy and I will be disappointed if (Ganson) doesn't come out and publicly apologise to our supporters and players." He told SkySports.
However, Sandercock didn't receive much support from Hull FC boss Peter Gentle who reminded him about a similar decision between the same sides that went against them last season.
"It sort of squares it up for last year," Gentle said. "You would need to talk to the referees. I'm not sure about the ruling, but we will take it."
This isn't the first time Steve Ganson has been involved in a controversial decision. The first Magic Weekend in 2007, Ganson awarded Leeds a last-minute win over Bradford which proved to be the wrong decision.
