Former world champions Mika Hakkinen and Alain Prost have defended the controversial Pirelli tyres this season saying they are adding to the "show business" of F1.
Some teams, notably Red Bull, have called for a drastic rethink of Pirelli's tyre approach, while other's notably Lotus and Ferrari, and have sided with the Italian tyre supplier.
Now double world champion Mika Hakkinen has given his backing to Pirelli believing the tyres are adding a new factor to the F1 show.
"I am of the opinion that motor racing is show business," he told Finnish broadcaster MTV3 in Monaco.
Hakkinen continued saying the combination of overtaking and pitstops are interesting for the fans and that engineers and drivers should "develop a car and driving style" that looks after the tyres."
He added the main reason the tyres are such a hotly debated topic in F1 this year is because teams who are struggling with the tyres "are using the media to throw fuel on the fire."
Quadruple world champion Alain Prost, also in Monaco as an ambassador for Renault, agreed with his fellow former McLaren driver.
"I think in the past there has been much criticism for there not being a show," he said.
"We should feel very lucky that we have these kinds of races."
