There have been many great rivalries along the years which is mainly due to the success of the two sides or because of social and political reasons. 

These games can get bitter but are filled with intense passion which is why  football captures such a worldwide audience. 

The emotion, drama and quality in footballing rivalries can't be compared to any other sport. Here are the top 10 rivalries in football: 

Fenerbahche vs Galatasaray 

Both these clubs are located in Istanbul and are separated by just a small body of water in the middle of the city. 

Fenerbahche and Galatasaray have been very successful in recent years which makes the rivalry even more intense. 

Partizan vs Red Star Belgrade 

One of the most violent derbies, the 'Eternal Derby' as they call it in Serbia is contested between the two best teams of the country.

The fans in Belgrade can be bitter towards one another which creates an extremely hostile atmosphere during games. 

Inter Milan vs AC Milan 

This rivalry is more than a century old and is between the two best teams in Milan. 

Inter and AC share the same stadium and the fans respect one another to some extent. The games are played whole-heartedly and a lot of skill is on show in this Italian derby. 

FC Porto vs SL Benfica 

Two of the best ever clubs in Portugal, Porto and Benfica have a fierce rivalry and their games are nicknamed as the 'O Classico'. 

Both clubs have a rich history and many of these games have been title deciders in Portugal. 

Porto's 2-1 win over Benfica this month helped them clinch the league and the atmosphere was very intense during that game. 

Lazio vs Roma 

Another Italian derby, this is contested between the two best teams in Rome. Lazio and Roma have been successful to some extent and both sets of fans enjoy when the other loses a vital game. 

There is usually a very lively atmosphere and the fixture is often known as the 'Derby Della Capitale'. 

Boca Juniors vs River Plate 

The 'Superclasico' is contested between the two Argentinian teams Boca Juniors and River Plate. 

Both clubs were created in the neighbourhood of La Boca and are the two most followed clubs in South America. They are the most successful teams in Argentina so there are usually fireworks in this derby

Celtic vs Rangers 

By far the two most successful Scottish clubs of all time, since 1986 either Rangers or Celtic have gone on to win the Scottish League. Their dominance in Scotland is immense and they are both from Glasgow. 

Celtic represents the Irish Catholics while Rangers represent the protestant faction. It is one of the most keenly awaited rivalries in Britain. 

Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke 04 

These clubs are located in the Ruhr region of Germany and it is the most intense derby in German football. 

Often known as the 'Revierderby', Dortmund and Schalke have had their own periods of domination in German football. Both clubs represent the industrial side of Germany and quality football is on display when they play one another. 

Liverpool vs Manchester United 

The biggest game in English football, this derby is contested between the two most successful clubs of England as they have over 100 titles between one another. 

The league position doesn't matter in this game and the atmosphere can get really good in these games which makes it an absolute must to watch such a game live. 

Manchester United have been more successful in recent history, capturing two more league titles than Liverpool but the Merseyside outfit has two more Champions League titles as compared to Manchester United. 

Real Madrid vs Barcelona 

The most recognised derby in world football, the 'El Clasico' is one of the most intense derbies in Spain and in the world. 

Quite popular due to the talent on show, these games are watched by many people around the world and is arguably the most awaited fixture in football. 

Although Real are the more successful club, Barcelona have been winning trophies domestically and in Europe for the last few years.
