Every summer there are one or two players who seem destined to make their move to a bigger club and after a long battle by their current club, the inevitable happens and they move clubs with the promise of money, trophies and in some cases a seat on the bench.

This year with Gareth Bale on the verge of leaving Tottenham and almost every club interested in securing his services, it sparked memories of previous summers when clubs everywhere lost their best players.

Here are five best transfer sagas:

Cesc Fabregas - Arsenal to Barcelona

This particular saga was unique in that it happened for consecutive seasons.

Fabregas who grew up at Barcelona's esteemed youth set up 'La Masia' was sensational for Arsenal after moving as a 16-year-old and was soon attracting interest from all over Europe - including his boyhood club. Eventually he made the move despite the best efforts from Arsene Wenger.

Eden Hazard - LOSC Lille to Chelsea

The Belgian's agent was crucial in this painstakingly drawn out saga as he was constantly linking his player to different clubs to ensure his client got what he wanted: a very very high salary.

Throughout it he claimed every big club was in for Hazard and the papers went with that, which drove the prices up until Chelsea eventually secured his signature.

Luka Modric - Tottenham to Real Madrid

Modric's saga and subsequent move I find quite ironic because while Harry Redknapp was still in charge at White Hart Lane, Andre Villas-Boas did his utmost to bring the diminutive Croatian to Chelsea but wasn't able to in the end.

It was only when Villas-Boas arrived at Tottenham that Modric was able to leave White Hart Lane when Mourinho lured him to become the stand out player on the bench at Real Madrid.

Gylfi Sigurdsson - Hoffenheim to Tottenham

This was interesting because it seemed that Sigurdsson had two options: Liverpool and Swansea but then out of nowhere came Tottenham swooping in and signing him.

He had excelled under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea on loan and he had clearly enjoyed his time there but when it looked like Rodgers was off to Liverpool, suddenly Sigurdsson wanted to follow him. Then to everyone's surprise, it was announced that he was moving to Tottenham.

Neymar - Santos to Barcelona

The young Brazilian starlet was dubbed by many as 'the next Pele'. He has been subject to the interest of a majority of the top clubs in Europe over the past two years.

He decided last summer he wanted to stay in Brazil for another year but he eventually agreed a deal in principle with Barcelona.

He has since played his last game for Santos, an emotional affair with no shortage of tears from everyone, himself included.
