On Facebook, Ronaldo’s page counts an outrageous amount of 57 million members and counting. The success of the former Manchester United talisman extends to Twitter where he is heading towards the 19 million mark in terms of followers.
Last weekend, the Portugal captain completed his goal of finishing as the highest goal scorer of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League. The inability of closest rivals Thomas Mueller and Robert Lewandowski to net goals at Wembley kept Ronaldo on top of the standings with 12 goals.
After ending Lionel Messi’s four-year reign as top scorer of the UEFA Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo has clinched yet another individual award. On Tuesday, the Madrid-based superstar posted a picture of the 2013 Social Star Award he received and added the following message:
“So proud to win a #socialstaraward for Most Popular Sportsperson! Big thanks to my fans, you made it happen!”
On Starcount.com on Tuesday, Ronaldo moved nine places up to break into the Top 20 ‘most popular in social media today’ chart. He had reportedly gathered 22,985 new Twitter followers within the last 24 hours. In the Sportsperson Chart, Ronaldo went up to second behind David Beckham and above Barcelona’s new capture, Neymar.
Also in the Sportsperson Chart’s Top 20 on Tuesday were basketball icon LeBron James (7th), Ronaldinho Gaucho (9th), Andres Iniesta (10th), Ricardo Kaka (11th), Wayne Rooney (13th), Mesut Özil (15th), Gerard Pique (16th), Sergio Ramos (19th), and the legendary Pele (20th).
