Manchester United legends 1-2 Real Madrid legends (3-5)
Sunday saw Old Trafford host a charity legends match between Manchester United and Real Madrid in aid of the Manchester United Foundation.
The match was played with a competitive yet fun style, with both sides giving away obvious fouls inside and outside the areas; however, the referee Kevin Friend decided not to award any of the fouls inside the box and let numerous barges from players like Zinedine Zidane and Jaap Stam go by.
The last time that these two legends sides met was at the Santiago Bernabéu last year in the first leg of the Manchester United Legend's Cup where Real Madrid won 3-2.
The game at Old Trafford started with Manchester United taking the game into their own hands and taking early dominance. However, they could not break through the Madrid back-line.
Real, however, turned the game on its head and took the lead through Fernando Morientes. The former Liverpool striker received the ball from Claude Makelele before curling the ball from the edge of the box into the bottom right-hand corner of Edwin van der Sar's goal.
United tried to get an equaliser in the last few minutes of the first half but to no avail.
At half-time Manchester United were allowed to play Ruud van Nistelrooy after he started for Real Madrid in the first half. And it was Van Nistelrooy who scored United's only goal of the game on 68 minutes. Dwight Yorke played the ball down the right wing to Van Nistelrooy, who beat the goalkeeper at his near post to finish into the top right-hand corner of the goal.
United just needed one goal to take it to a penalty shoot-out and nearly did just that with Madrid keeper Sanchez punching the ball straight to Yorke, who chipped the onlooking 'keeper but hitting the Madrid crossbar.
That meant that Madrid could capitalise and counter on United's miss - and Morientes drew in two defenders and disguised his pass to Ruben de la Red who finished with ease passed Raymond van der Gouw.
Madrid won the game and the trophy in front of just over 60,000 people at the Theatre of Dreams.
