Paul Heyman is one of the greatest managers in recent years in the WWE, being a general pain in the backside for certain superstars whilst building up the reputation of his ‘guys’; it is no secret that his work on the microphone is part of the reason he is so successful.
The saying says it all, ‘Paul Heyman can sell ice to an Eskimo’, because he is just that good on the microphone, and we have seen the likes of Rob Van Dam, Brock Lesnar, CM Punk and now Curtis Axel be deemed as Paul Heyman guys; a great honour.
But when you take a look at what Friday Night Smackdown has to offer; the closest thing which lives up to Paul Heyman is Zeb Colter; a controversial character but very impressive on the microphone also. Obviously the gimmicks between Heyman and Colter differ as Heyman is more of a manager who focuses on business and does whatever is best for his clients; whilst Zeb Colter’s character is based around a racist, xenophobic heel who strongly advocates anti-immigration beliefs; although it is controversial you cannot deny that it is not entertaining.
Now that Paul Heyman is beginning to introduce more guys to his clientele; maybe it is time for Zeb Colter to do the same; sure he is doing a brilliant job with Jack Swagger, someone he has worked with for a number of months and has helped his rise from a jobber to a world title contender; and he has the capability of doing the same with other superstars.
If he is given the same freedom as Paul Heyman, what is stopping Zeb Colter from doing the same as the man who has helped elevate the likes of CM Punk and Brock Lesnar into household names? Superstars who are heels or even face superstars working towards a heel turn would fit in perfectly with Zeb Colter; or even guys who have much weaker microphone skills and need someone to address the fans for them.
However, the most difficult element will be to grab a superstar who can pull off a ‘Real American’ gimmick and show that they are against immigrants and remain patriotic; only a handful of superstars can effectively show that on a weekly basis.
So, if Zeb Colter is to do a Paul Heyman and introduce his own Zeb Colter guys to elevate their current status in the WWE; who could he align himself with? Let’s take a look.
Ted DiBiase is one of the most underutilised talents in the WWE today; his greatest days were perhaps when he was with Cody Rhodes and they were Tag Team Champions; well as being a part of Legacy which included Rhodes and Randy Orton. But since then DiBiase has not really been missed or cared for; Zeb Colter can change all that.
DiBiase is not the best on the microphone but his in-ring ability is pretty good, he has charisma and remains confident and for that reason working with Colter and Swagger will definitely enhance his reputation and will be taken seriously again, as working as a face does not work for him. The biggest problem for DiBiase will be to convince the fans that he is as patriotic as Colter and Swagger and especially with rumours that he is planning on retiring from wrestling, who knows whether we will be able to see DiBiase go at it once more.
Mark Henry has represented the USA on many occasions for powerlifting and weightlifting, so as an American Olympic hero, who better to fit in with the All-American Jack Swagger in the group? Understandably, Henry is a lot more successful than most of the guys on this list as he is a former World Champion and has been in a couple of big feuds, most recently with Sheamus.
Mark Henry is out with an injury now and it has been said that he is in big trouble with WWE officials as he took an unauthorised leave of absence so this major push the WWE had planned for him, could go down the drain. However, when Henry does return joining a group could lighten the workload on him and he will be able to stick up for Colter a lot better than Jack Swagger has managed to do, and for once the rival superstars will genuinely be afraid of the consequences.
Again like DiBiase; the likelihood of this happening just hangs in the balance, whether Henry will be given this opportunity remains to be seen, but with a rumoured face turn on the horizon, maybe we won’t be so lucky to witness Mark Henry becoming a Zeb Colter guy. Plus, not forgetting Colter’s racist gimmick; maybe including Henry wouldn’t be the best direction to go in.
Yes, you read that right; Randy Orton. Although he is levels above Jack Swagger on the microphone anyway when Orton is competing as a heel, he is unstoppable and this unstoppable force is something that Colter would need in order to become a destructive stable. There are reliable rumours that Orton should be turning heel soon so we cannot rule this out; however whether he would be chosen to go in this direction and go all patriotic, that may not be happening.
Even as a heel, it would be odd witnessing Orton and Swagger working together as we have been used to seeing Orton as the good guy for so long, and it is not really in Orton’s nature to turn on someone so I believe working WITH Swagger won’t be effective, but if he works with Colter alone, away from Swagger much like CM Punk and Brock Lesnar do; then it could possible work but we cannot rule it out, one thing is for sure, with Orton in the stable it surely will elevate the status for everyone involved.
Damien Sandow would be brought into a stable in order to share Colter’s workload, as Swagger barely speaks and this leaves Zeb Colter with the duties of saying everything on his mind and speaking for Jack Swagger too. In steps Damien Sandow who has tremendous microphone skills and using Colter and Swagger will definitely help him move up towards a new level.
We are used to seeing Sandow in comedic situations as he uses his intelligence to fool people which we usually find hilarious, but if Sandow uses the same aggression, terminology and wisdom; he could be a real winner as a Zeb Colter guy. Using Sandow to speak will not make Jack Swagger look weaker, as Sandow could talk from a superstar’s perspective along with Swagger, rather than having Colter talk from simply a manager’s perspective.
The manner in which Sandow talks, his actions etc; they all fit in perfectly with Colter’s beliefs and I believe Sandow would be one of the firm favourites to really become a true heel in the WWE and work with Zeb Colter.
The Big Show
Although The Big Show can talk so he won’t need to as much; he could play a similar role to Mark Henry if one or the other joins the stable, but really; nothing is stopping them from both joining but that remains highly unlikely. If The Big Show does join then it will have the same outcome as every other superstar involved in the stable, it will draw him more heat from the audience as we will begin to see a new side of The Big Show.
Rather than coming out on a weekly basis and talking about being the largest athlete in the world and wanting to cause havoc, he can use this to his advantage and switch up his style by talking about immigration and how he hates outsiders taking up the American jobs for example; and if anybody has a problem with what Colter says, they won’t have the problem of beating Jack Swagger, they would have The Big Show as their problem, another superstar who I believe would fit in well with Zeb Colter.
If the rumours surrounding Daniel Bryan are true then we could be seeing the popular figure turning heel, and joining Zeb Colter in his cause would be a perfect way for Bryan to be seen as evil, and not remaining as a heel who still manages to draw cheers from the audience, which is what most of us are expecting anyway.
He is levels above Jack Swagger on the microphone and his in-ring ability is incredible; using Zeb Colter’s controversial character as a platform is brilliant for Bryan to become a heel amongst the fans and he could definitely manage to draw out boos rather than cheers from the audience. The likelihood of this happening remains to be seen as working with Swagger may not be the best way to go to for Bryan.
Last but by no means least, Cody Rhodes who I would consider as the perfect fit, whether it is Cody Rhodes on his own or even if he remains with Damien Sandow as part of Team Rhodes Scholars; the reason he will fit in perfectly all comes down to his father, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. Using Dusty’s character will allow Colter to hype up Cody as a man who also believes in the same cause, and like everyone else he will also step up a level or two by fighting in this cause.
He isn’t exactly being used at his best at the moment, working with Sandow is great for him but consistently losing in a weak tag team division is not doing his single career any favours; if he wants to become a top heel then joining Colter is the most logical way to go.
Without a doubt Zeb Colter is one of the best talkers in the WWE today and he needs to work with the right mix of superstars, currently we have Jack Swagger someone who is poor on the microphone but being an All-American, which works for him. Using guys who are underutilized is the best thing, as Colter would be able to make these underutilized superstars into genuine heels.
Personally, I would say Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes are the most logical picks; they can talk, great in the ring and they work well together anyway; plus you can actually imagine them standing in the ring and shouting ‘We The People!’
Who do you think could become a Zeb Colter guy?
