Liverpool want Sunderland's Simon Mignolet to be their new goalkeeper should Pepe Reina leave the club this summer, according to The Guardian.

Reina was expected to leave the Merseyside club for Barcelona, but Barca first choice Victor Valdes has reversed his decision to leave the Spanish champions.

While this has hampered Reina's decisions, there is still much speculation that the 30-year-old will not be at Anfield come September.

It is because of this that Brendan Rodgers is not stopping his search for a new shot-stopper with the Sunderland 'keeper apparent top choice.

There were also rumours that Asmir Begovic from Stoke could move to Merseyside, while Reading's Alex McCarthy was also speculated over.

Mignolet tops the list though after a spectacular season at, once relegation threatened, Sunderland.

The Belgian swept the club's and supporters' player of the year awards for the Black Cats keeping 11 clean sheets in the process this season.

There may be another twist in the tale for Mignolet though as it is rumoured that Arsenal are also chasing the 25-year-old's signature.
