Dwight Howard shot 49.2 per cent from the free-throw line this season for the La Lakers, so losing to somebody in a free-throw shooting contest should not be that much of a surprise - even if it was against housewife and mother-of-three, Kelzer Nielson.
Lakers' premier center took to the gym to take on the daughter of the columnist T.J. Simers - and, it turned out, she’s a pretty good free-throw shooter.
The 27-year-old happened to be so confident in his abilities, he volunteered to shoot left-handed. The initial terms of the wager were: if Howard lost he’d have to give $5,000 to a charity of Simers and Nielson's choice, and live with the knowledge that a mother-of-three beat him in a free-throw shooting contest.
However, things couldn’t have got off to a worse start for the big man, who missed his first five shots before splashing one in. Meanwhile, Kelzer Nielson hit two of her first six free-throw attempts.
Howard had a chance to tie things up on his ninth attempt, but it failed to hit the target and ended up bouncing off the side of the rim. Nielson sunk her 10th shot and her fifth bucket of the contest to put Howard on ice and take the victory.
Simers of the Los Angeles Times later stated that Howard eventually did beat his daughter in a free-throw contest — it just took him two hours to do so.
