Tottenham are in desperate need of a prolific striker and it seems they have their hearts set on luring Aston Villa’s 22-year-old hit man Christian Benteke to north London.
The Mirror reports that Spurs will offer England striker and White Hart Lane fan favourite Jermain Defoe plus an undisclosed amount for Benteke.
But they’ll face competition for the Belgian’s signature from Atletico Madrid and Arsenal.
Atletico Madrid will be looking to replace star man Radamel Falcao, who has moved to Monaco, and it seems that Benteke is in their sights.
Arsenal, on the other hand, are also in the market for a striker as Olivier Giroud is currently their only out-and-out striker. Their top transfer target Stevan Jovetic looks set to stay in Italy and Arsene Wenger has expressed his admiration for Benteke.
The Belgian striker had a remarkable first season in the Premier League and managed 19 goals to save the Villains from relegation. Clearly his efforts did not go unappreciated as several top clubs are after his signature this summer.
The Mirror reports that Aston Villa has so far shown no interest in signing Defoe. The 30-year-old also netted 19 times last season but managed only two after Christmas as he struggled with injury, and first-team football was hard to come by as Andre Villas-Boas seemed to favour Emmanuel Adebayor in the latter half of the season.
Defoe is reportedly valued around £7m and Tottenham are desperate to offload him to Villa to sweeten a deal which they hope will be more attractive than Atletico’s £25m, which they are allegedly ready to offer for Benteke.
According to The Mirror, Atletico coach Diego Simeone and director general Miguel Angel Gil Marin have held talks with Villa and told the Midlands club they want an answer within 10 days.
