Olympic sprinter meets match in robot race showdown
Video: Adam Gemili goes head to head with BRIAN the robot in 100m showdown
"The last 12 months have been absolutely crazy," says Team GB sprinter Adam Gemili when reflecting on his rise from non-league footballer to competing alongside the likes of Yohan Blake and Tyson Gay at last summer's Olympic Games.
Well, having now raced a sprinting robot who pipped him in a 100m dash with a freakishly quick time of 10.1 seconds, he can safely say that the next year is set to be as bizarre as the previous one.
Gemili, who made the 100m Olympic semi-finals in London last summer, met his match in "BRIAN the robot" - insurance comparison website Confused.com's new mascot - when the pair went head to head at the 19-year-old's home training ground in Enfield.
The Man Vs Robot race proved to be keenly-contest but in the end machine beat man by just 0.1s. It proved to be too much for BRIAN, who could barely contain his digital delight as he crossed the line.
Speaking from trackside, Gemili, who hopes to compete in the 2016 Olympics as well as the World Championships next month, said: “I’d heard BRIAN was fast, so when he tweeted me to propose a race I thought this could be fun, but also a great way to test myself as I embark on a really important and exciting summer sprinting for Great Britain.
"I hope I don’t have to face robots in Rio! ”
Gemili has a point - Brian ran a time quick enough to make him joint-world 100m record holder between 1936 and 1956. Looks like he may have picked the wrong career then….
