Jessica Ennis-Hill has withdrawn from competing in the Women’s Athletic League Meeting in Edinburgh on Saturday because of a stiff Achilles.

The Olympic heptathlon champion was due to make her first appearance of the outdoor season and compete in the hurdles, javelin and long-jump in Scotland, but has been advised by the UKA Medical team to rest up.

“Obviously I am really disappointed as I was really looking forward to getting my season underway on Saturday, but I am not going to take any risks," the 27-year-old said today.

"I have been told if I rest this now I should be able to resume my competitions as soon as possible – hopefully next week.

“I am sorry to all the people in Edinburgh who planned to come and support me alongside the other athletes– but hope I can compete there another time. It promises to be a really good meeting and I wish all the other athletes good luck with their performances.” She added.

Ennis-Hill, who married partner Andy this year, is aiming to replicate her gold-medal winning performace at the Olympics when she heads to Moscow for the World Championships in August.

Her next scheduled competition is the Diamond League event in Oslo on June 13.
