The debate is both continuous and vociferous: which of the footballing nations can truly say that they are the purveyors of the top league in world football?

There are few true contenders but this article shall consider the very best of them.

1. English Premier League

England is the birthplace of football, the nation where some of the greatest players to have ever graced the game have plied their trade.

Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes and Gareth Bale are all world-class individuals who selected the Premier League for their most prolific spells as players.

Add this to the world-class stadiums and highly regarded managerial talent and it is clear that the Premier League will long remain one of the greatest leagues in world football.

2. German Bundesliga

Over the last few years German football has become one of the most exciting leagues in the world.

It has superb individual performers such as Franck Ribery, Stefan Kießling, Mario Gotze, Mats Hummels and Diego, making it clear that the Bundesliga has a wealth of fantastic talent.

However, there is the issue of lack of competition exhibited - especially this year. Bayern Munich decimated the rest of the league, although there were cup defeats against their perennial rivals, Borussia Dortmund.

The fact that the Champions League final was made up of these two shows the prowess of the Bundesliga, which shows no sign of abating.

3. Spanish Primera Liga

With arguably the best team of an era, Barcelona, it is quite apparent why the Spanish Primera Liga is touted by many as the greatest league in the world.

Incredible drama, passionate fans; underpinned by the bedrock of sensational football talents such as Lionel Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

The problem which showed itself in the Bundesliga is also exhibited in the Spanish Primera Liga: the massive lack of competition due to the sheer dominance of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

4. French Ligue 1

The French have arrived a tad later than their other rivals in the money hunt but they have wasted no time in attempting to establish themselves as football powerhouses.

Nouveau riche PSG and Monaco have made sensational signings which have astonished the rest of world football with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Radamel Falcao and Thiago Silva to name but a few.

However, making top signings is not the only factor of a top league although France has many years left to develop.

5. Italian Serie A

Breathtaking stadiums, superb players and passionate fans: Italian football is definitely up there as a great league.

However, combined with the racism, match-fixing scandals and occasionally dull football tactics, they are a long way from being the best league in the world.

This article would suggest that the English Premier League still holds its title as greatest football league due to the competitiveness, magic players and superb fans.

This is not to say that change is not on the horizon, with the Spanish and Germans very much determined to steal this crown.

But what do you think? Has the Premiership really lost its title? If so which league is truly the best of them all? Leave your comments below
