Barcelona have joined the race to sign highly-rated Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, according to reports from talkSPORT.

Chelsea have been strongly linked with the Frenchman, who came to the fore this season after impressing at the Portuguese champions.

The 22-year-old has made 53 appearances for Porto since joining the club in 2011 and has a £30m release clause.

Mangala helped Porto to a third successive Primera Liga title this season as they beat Benfica to the trophy by just a single point.

According to reports in Spain, the Catalan side have earmarked Mangala as a summer priority, with their defensive unit in need of reinforcements following the release of Eric Abidal.

There are rumours that Barcelona will offer Porto £20m and, although this is below the buy-out clause, it is an offer the 2004 Champions League winners may accept after they paid £5.5m to sign him from Standard Liege two years ago.
