Swansea City have completed the signing of Jose Canas from Real Betis after reaching a pre-contract agreement in April, according to Sky Sports.

The move will be ratified on 1 July 2013, when Canas’ contract with Real Betis comes to an end and the transfer window officially opens.

The 26-year-old Spaniard, whose full name is Jose Alberto Canas Ruiz-Herrera, is a product of Real Betis’ youth ranks and was given his first-team debut in May 2009.

He has since gone on to make 68 appearances for the Spanish side, with 19 of these appearances coming from the bench, but is yet to register a goal.

The man born in Cadiz played a key role in Real Betis successfully securing a Europa League play-off spot – after they finished seventh in the league – playing in 27 La Liga games for the side.

The position in which he is best deployed is defensive midfield and he is known for his ability to read the play in front of his back-line, making vital interceptions. Furthermore, he is controlled and rarely lunges into a tackle.

His acquisition seems perfect for Swansea. He is a player that will just sit in front of the defence and let the more creative players do the work; using Swansea’s effective passing style. This will allow the full-backs to really push on and allow Leon Britton to just play in behind the forward.

The move was also seen as an opportunity for Swansea chairman, Huw Jenkins, to quieten the suggestions that there is a rift between himself and Swans manager, Michael Laudrup.

He stated on the club’s official website: “Myself, the manager and our recruitment staff are all agreed on the quality of players we would like to sign to help us remain competitive in the Barclays Premier League.

“We are continuing to work behind the scenes, in private wherever and whenever we can, to strengthen our squad.

“For that reason it is disappointing that I have to respond to the speculation of unrest at the club after the fantastic season we have had.”
