Real Madrid have dealt Manchester City a blow by announcing that defender Pepe is not for sale this summer.
It was rumoured that City were prepared to launch a deal worth £21m for the Portuguese star but Madrid president Florentino Perez quashed speculation.
Perez told Spanish radio station Onda Cero: "Pepe is not for sale. He will not leave this summer, not in my opinion anyway.
"He is one of the best defenders in the world. It is very difficult to find someone like him."
Manager Jose Mourinho has already left Madrid in favour of a move to Chelsea and there are expected to be more departures from the Bernabeu.
Pepe has made 199 appearances for the Spanish giants since joining the club from Porto in 2007.
The 30-year-old seemed to fall out of favour with Mourinho towards the end of the season and lost his place in the starting team to young French star Raphael Varane.
Pepe has won five trophies in his time with Real Madrid, including La Liga twice. He has never won the Champions League although has reached the semi-finals in the previous three campaigns.
