I’m still in shock at how this series is going between Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins.

On paper these teams should at least be evenly matched. In fact I believe the Penguins are a little bit better than Boston. I mean they’ve managed to keep their core players like Crosby, Malkin, Kunitz and Letang.

Plus the organisation added some fantastic veteran players when they signed Jarome Iginla and Brendan Morrow. So theoretically this team should be striking fear into all their opponents. But the cold hard truth is that the team’s been playing horribly. In fact the only Penguin player that deserves any credit is Tomas Volkoun.

He’s come in for Marc Andrea Fleury and been an absolute hero for his team. Yes, he’s let in some bad goals throughout the series, but overall he’s played great.

I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to figuring out the lack of offence from the Pittsburgh Penguins. The players I mentioned above certainly have proven they can rack up the points. I mean has everyone forgotten about that long winning streak, this team has the ability to win games. But again, this is just talk, the statistics in this series tell the story.

Crosby, Malkin and Letang have been non-existent so far in this series. Crosby has been matched up against Chara, and has not found a way to get past the big man. In fact, Crosby has been in the sports news for all the wrong reasons. He’s had a limited amount of shots, his passing play has been horrible, and he’s been turning the puck over far too often. It’s been the same story for Malkin and Letang as well.

Newly acquired Jarome Iginla does have two assists, but has taken some really stupid penalties throughout the series. The agitator Matt Cooke has tried many times to shake things up by trying to get under the skin of the Boston Bruins. However, Milan Lucic has done a wonderful job of snuffing out any possible fourth line momentum.

Now this supposedly, star studded Pittsburgh Penguins roster is down three games to none in the series. I never saw this coming at all, but it just goes to show that anything can happen. The Pittsburgh Penguin players just have to get back to basics now.

They’ve got to start by getting more difficult shots on Tukka Rask. Because let’s face it, Rask hasn’t had much difficulty dealing with any of the Penguins shots since game one. Crosby and Malkin have to step it up. Crosby was held to just six shots in two games recently. I believe that is unacceptable for a player who is arguably the best player in the game right now.

The players were starting to increase the pressure in the last game, which was positive. But I believe the bottom line is there needs to be way more traffic in front of Rask. I know being down three games is a huge mountain to climb, but if any team can do it, it’s the Pittsburgh Penguins.
