Returning Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has vowed to return to Stamford Bridge with a bang, as a thank you to new manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese coach held talks with Lukaku last week to discuss Lukaku's future at Stamford Bridge.
Prior to Mourinho's arrival, Lukaku endured a torrid time playing under Andre Villas-Boas and Roberto Di Matteo. The Belgian spent the majority of the 2011/12 season playing in the Chelsea reserves. Lukaku then famously claimed that it didn't feel like he'd won the Champions League due to his lack of involvement.
Lukaku then went out on loan to Steve Clark's West Brom. Lukaku enjoyed a prolific season at the Hawthorns, scoring 17 goals in 39 appearances.
But it seems that Lukaku will be raring to go when the season resumes in August after his productive talk with Mourinho.
And Lukaku told reporters this week that he is ready to start again at Stamford Bridge following his disappointing start.
"I always said my ambition was to play for Chelsea," Lukaku was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. "Now I will go back to Stamford Bridge and try and play even more games than I did at West Brom.
"If I can score a few early on, it could turn into a good season for me. I had a good conversation with Jose Mourinho and I know it's up to me to show I'm worth a place."
And Lukaku also pointed to the World Cup as an added incentive to perform well in a Chelsea shirt.
"It is the World Cup next year, and I need to be playing," he added. "But if I don't get in the Chelsea team often enough then I won't deserve to be in the national squad."
